Polishing off the month

Hey guys :) sorry for the delay, as you can see I am mid-updating my site as I got bored of the other style!! Here is an upbeat read while I'm in the update process :)

I have to say, I may have a little unhealthy obsession with 'Colour Show' nail varnishes this month. However I really do hate having to pay extortionate prices for varnish - at just 2.99, and usually with a 3  for 2 deal on, these seem perfect. My absolute favourites are the pale pink and white, very cute and girlie, however sometimes I like to be a bit edgy with some black or colour popping blue! I got most of these babies from Tesco or Superdrug :) go get some now! Bargain

Interview With Model - Billie Brown

Lydia Brown aka Billie Brown - Model.
I talk to Lydia about being a high end model, the good the bad and the ugly!

THE BASICS
Name: Lydia Brown
Model Name: Billie Brown
Age: 21
Agency: Premier Model Management (Since age 16)
Education: Highworth Grammar School (Till Year 11)

"I COULDN'T EVEN TELL YOU HOW NERVOUS I WAS AT MY FIRST SHOOT"

TRIGGER
When I asked Lydia "So when did you first think about being a model", I just thought thats what you did, like any other job - think it through, then go for it. However she replied with "I never really sat down and thought about being a model" Well looks like she got it very lucky then! She continues "I guess from watching shows such as 'Britains Next Top Model' and 'America's Next Top Model' it was something that I'd always aspired of doing. Honestly, deep down I never really thought it would happen". Knowing Lydia from when she was at school, I have to say she definitley had the natural figure to be a model but even I am amazed and proud of how far shes actually been able to take it!
DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS.

1,2,3 BABY STEPS
My next interest in regards to Lydias career was how she actually started. I have never really known how you first get involved in professional modeling and I'm sure I'm not alone. "I was first signed by 'Oxygen' after I did a walk-in" A what? Thank god Lydia explained this bit; "It literally means I walked in and said 'I want to be a model'" Sounds like a pretty sweet deal. . . why can't we all do that!! :)
"I worked with them for almost a year and did my FIRST FASHION WEEK IN MILAN" I have to say I am certainly extremely jealous of this!! "When I got back I was doing castings at the weekend and managed to get scouted by Premier Model Management. After meeting with the owner and their bookers I was moved into their agency. After being signed I carried on in school. It was very important for both my Parents and Premier that I continued with my education while they built me as a model. I guess they were right I was only 16!". Sounds like a LOT of exciting stuff for a 16 year old...we are so jealous!

CLICK, CLICK, FLASH
On all these modelling programmes we always see their photo shoots and how fun they look, but also how hard they can be, being shot underwater, up on harnesses and other such crazies. So I was intrigued to know how Lydia found her first shoot, she told me "I could'nt even tell you how nervous I was. The thing with modelling is, that while you're building a portfolio it is necessary to do 'test' shoots. Basically meaning unpaid photo shoots with up and coming photographers. My first test was AMAZING, the photographer was Sing Lo in his studio flat . . . so I was literally being shot in his bedroom!. As you can imagine this was quite nerve racking, but he made me feel so comfortable and we got some amazing shots. One of them is still, to this day, one of my favourite pictures!"

"TRAVELLING THE WORLD WOULD HAVE TO BE THE BEST EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD"

THE BEST
Being a model is presented to the outsiders as quite a glamorous lifestyle, getting to wine and dine at the best places, party hard at times and be able to travel to amazing venues, so I couldn't wait to find out what Lydia's 'Best Bits' have been.
"Blimey, I don't even know where to start with this question. I guess it would be travelling the world, yes, thats the best experience I've had. I have literally up and left England and lived in places I could never dreamed of: Athens, Istanbul, Milan, New York, Miami . . .and they're just the places I've lived in for over a month! A lot of the time I will fly to places for work where I will be put up in a hotel for a few nights" In the pent house suites I'm sure!! "I work, and then I fly back home again. While living awat for months I generally LOVE metting people from all walks of life, all with strong ambitions. Thats what tends to bring people together of different ages, genders, religions and races. I can honestly say that is a massive highlight of being a model."

LIFESTYLE
The life-style has also brought some amazing experiences. I've been to places I could never afford, had it not been for the people I've met and connections I've made. I've been to Ibiza twice, Barcelona, Wined and Dined with celebs and partied with ROCKSTARS! There is just no way I would have been able to do that with my own back account" I know what you mean!! "I guess being branded a model definitley has its perks. I'd also say filming the Loreal Feria commercial was a BIG high point in my career and an amazing experience. Although it was an incredibly long day 5am-10pm, and generally hard work . . . NOTHING beats the fact I got to say "I'm worth it" :)

FLAWS
With incredible experiences and amazing oppotunity, I can't help but wonder if there is anything negative about the job of a model. Lydia speaks to set the record straight . . .
"There is a lot of down sides to being a model, I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but it's not all 'Glitz and Glamour' TRUST ME!. There are times when I've been unpaid for a whole 6 months! I've been poked at, called fat, had every insecurity of mine pointed out. I've worked for free more times than you've had hot dinners, I've been stranded in cold shitty hotels with no water for days IN TURKEY." Opps, maybe its not the pent house in each one then! "I've been away from family for almost 3 months at a time, I was basically a walking suitcase for 2 years! I've been grabbed. perved on. I can never make plans as I only find out what I'm doing the day before at like 6pm. People judge me before meeting me and I'm automatically vein and arrogant, because I'm a model. Its almost like I'm jobless at times, constantly looking for work. Even when its all going well, you never know what tomorrow will bring, it could end it all.

BRINGING THE OUTSIDERS IN
"Although on the outside modelling looks like the easier job in the world, that couldn't be further from the truth. Living in different countries for months on end is an amazing experience, don't get me wrong, but its also VERY hard! Models generally don't get driven around to their castings. We get plonked in a place we have NO idea about, given a map the size of our bodies and get told: an address and a time, and we have to make it there. Generally in Fashion Week we get about 20 - 25 castings a day! There is literally no time to eat, drink or even sit down. Girls who do all the cities for Fashion Week are the walking dead by the end of it, working 5am-2am near enough every day for a month while travelling through New York, London, Paris and Milan." Ahh come on Lydia, that doesn't sound too bad, I wouldn't mind going to all those places. Although I wouldn't last on the lack of sleep! :)

"I lead a pretty normal life style, I'm just like anyone my age. I like going out with mates, spending time with my amazing boyfriend and chilling. But honestly, I have nothing to compare it to. I'd say its normal, but then again define normal!"

OUR EVERYDAY READS
Magazines: Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Reveal, More, New, Now, OK, Men's Health, Fabulous, Look, T3, Good Housekeeping, ES Mag, Absolutely, Dariuss.
Companies: Nike, ASOS, Loreal, Agent Provocateur, Rimmel, Swarovski, Wella, Debenhams, Boo Hoo, New Look, TK Maxx, Headmasters, Warehouse, Fred & Ginger, Dunelm Optics.
Those are just the London clients, as there are honestly too many to remember!

SURREALISM
I asked Lydia if she was taken back by how far she's acutally come, and how much she has achieved at only 21. She replied
"To be completely honest with you, I hardly notice, its just my job so from the outside its probably a lot more noticeable that I'm doing well. To me its just what happens in a job, you work your way up to be the best you can be."
That is very true indeed.

"MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE JOB IS PAY DAY"

DO YOU STILL ENJOY IT NOW?
"Yes definitley, because it's never the same. Pretty much every job I do differs from the last, so there is never a boring moment in sight"

ADVICE TO OTHERS
"Go for it! Check out agency walk-in times and just do it! Don't be scared or nervous, just be yourself as a lot depends on personality"

FASHION INDUSTRY
I asked Lydia if she felt her style had changed as a result of constantly being around the fashion industry and she said . . .
"Yes I guess so. Before I was never really into fashion, I can't say I really am now either, however I definitley dress different for castings ect. Almost like a uniform. I have random designer pieces that I am able to mix with high street to make my own dope style. My latest designer obsessions are my MUUBAA Leather Trousers and my Mulberry Clutch.

IMPORTANT THINGS
"I've learnt that my family and friends are extremely important. Work can be up one minute and down the next, so having a stable support is a MUST. I've learnt to budget, saving about 50% of what I earn works for me as then I'm never stuck of money, you never know when you're going to get paid!"

5 YEARS TIME. . .
"I'm not entirely sure where I want to be in 5 years time, its not something I think about too often, I much prefer taking every day as it comes. I know by next year, my boyfriend and I will own a house, and thats as far as I've thought."
Sounds like you're pretty much on the right track Lydia! Good Luck with the future!! :)

"there's no such thing as too many clothes!"

I have to say, firstly I'm very sorry to have been lagging on my blog, especially this page - seeing as I go shopping pretty much every week I have been awful at keeping you lot informed on my purchases!

BUT HAVE NO FEAR . . . I AM BACK! :)

Sorry for the bad quality of the photos, they are from my phone, oopsy!!
Here are a few little pictures of the things I've been buying on my travels - for more regular updates add my instagram - mini_monts

BEST BUY OF THE SUMMER

Retro Sunglasses

Camden Market - £5

Topshop and other retail stores sell very similar sunglasses to these, but at 4 or 5 times the price, and if you're like me and are forever loosing or breaking your sunglasses, there is no way you want to be spending £25 quid every time! (unless its Raybans - we all make exceptions for Raybans).

Left to Right

New Look
Topshop
New Look

I have to say I love necklaces, and always get asked where they are from so even though these 3 are a little old, I thought I would share it with you.

I have new necklace purchases further down :)

MUST HAVE SHIRT FOR SUMMER

SO SO SO IN LOVE WITH THIS!!

Shirt - Topshop - £40

ALL PURCHASED IN CAMDEN :)

I AM IN LOVE WITH CAMDEN!!

Top left - Over Sized Blazer, Black and White Checked, Vintage Shop
Top right - Black and White Tweed Cropped Jacket - Vintage Shop

2 for 1 - £20

Bottom left - Velvet, Gold Stitched, Oversized Waistcoat - Vintage Shop £15

Bottom right - Red and White Pinstripe Dungarees - Vintage Shop £20

Sunglasses - Camden Market - £5

A TASTE OF TRIBAL

Top 2 Tops - Topshop (how many top's in that sentence!)

Bottom 2 Tops - Zara

All 3 Necklaces - Topshop

I felt as though my wardrobe needed some added colour and some full length tops which wouldn't have my belly out :) so here we have it - I cant decide which one I love more - I get too in love with clothes, I know!!

All Items Above - New Look

I bought each crop top to go with the floor length orange maxi skirt as I loved the skirt so much!
BUT IM STILL YET TO WEAR IT :( Sun please come out!!

Looks great with a chunky necklace and some sandals.

Shirt - Topshop

ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS!

Plus I know two other girls who have it and love it too - I have to say, I did copy them!!

All 3 Crop Tops - New Look

I know you may think I am very strange, but when I first bought just the Lime top I wanted to literally wear it out all the time, with everything I had - but my flat mates told me off. So the next time I was in New Look I thought f**k it, and bought the same in Blue and Peach so now I have 3 different choices!!

Both Tops - Urban Outfitters

Left - Lemon Crop Top - Topshop

Right - Aztec Print Long Sleeved Crop Top - New Look

Bottom - High Neck Lime and Silver Crop Top - Topshop

MATCHING SUITS

Top and Skirt - New Look Shepherds Bush Westfields

Now I'm not one to look like a supermodel in trousers, so when the new craze of matching pants and tops/blazers came onto the scene I was gutted!

However I managed to spot this high waisted skirt and crop top to match, although most people have mistaken it for a dress, and I fell in love!!

I have had so many compliments about the skirt singularly and the outfit together - most don't believe that its a New Look number, and neither would I!

Top Image - Banana Skirt - Topshop Oxford Street

Bottom Image - Floral Cream Skirt - Topshop Oxford Street

The cream floral skirt was actually bought while waiting for the banana skirt to come into the shops. I saw the Banana skirt about a month ago on Topshop's instagram and just had to have it, but when I scoured the floors of Londons Oxford Street Topshop I couldn't find it anywhere. I was so sad :( but bought the cream one to cheer myself up!

The following week I went into the same store again, not expecting to buy anything, and I saw the Banana skirt and ran half the length of the store - Its safe to say some people wondered who had let me out of the loony bin!

I can definitely say that high waisted skirts are my calling, I just cant get enough!

GETTING PREPARED FOR SUMMER

I have to admit, I have WAY too many shorts. . . and I hardly ever actually wear shorts.
But never the less it doesn't stop me buying them over and over again! Luckily this time I went for some different styles, denim that don't have my bum hanging out and some patterned cotton ones :)

Both high waisted and both waiting for the sunshine to properly make an appearance!

HERE COMES SUMMER

Dress - Urban Outfitters

Necklace - New Look

Perfect for a spring or summers day, topped off with some sandals and a cute cardigan.

RETRO OUTFIT

Over sized Blazer - Urban Outfitters (Bought at a charity shop in Manchester)

Dress - Urban Outfitters

Necklace - New Look

Sunnies - Camden Market

All I have to say about this outfit is that I feel super cool wearing it :)
Plus the dress is SOOOO comfy!

I added some flat black ,lace up ankle boots from Topshop to top the look off!

I LOVE THIS OUTFIT!!

This is actually all new stuff and I am wearing it as we speak!

Jeans - Topshop - £38

Shirt (BEAUTIFUL) - Topshop - £40

This outfit is so summery, but still warm, so perfect for the weather at the moment.
Its also pretty girly which is rare for me!
I have to say the shirt is an absolute LOVE of this month

Black Nike Blazers - £63 (with student discount)

From Schuh Oxford Street

I have to state that I am a massive sucker for trainers, especially high tops - I do already own a red version of these, however I felt that black would go with more than my red ones do - and my excuse in my head was that I need them for work! :) THEY ARE SO COMFY!

These are my newest purchase - My beautiful Chelsea boots

Topshop - £75

I know they are pretty pricey, but they are gorgeous and will last (I hope) I've wanted some for ages.
If you're like me and the majority of your shoe collection is trainers, these babies are perfect for when the attire is a little more dressy!!

Inverview with Photographer - Jessica Wright

JESSICA WRIGHT -PHOTOGRAPHER.
The Basics
Name: Jessica Wright
Age: 18
Education: Studying Fashion Photography at London College of Fashion (UAL)
Interests: Photography, Culture, Fashion, Socialising (don't we all love that one!)

"PHOTOGRAPHY RUNS THROUGH MY VEINS"

FASHION FANATIC
As most of us find, when getting into the routine of being a Terrible Teenager we all start to be aware of the way we look and our dress sense. Jess is no different, "I first started to become interested in fashion when I was about 15". For many people clothes is a means of presenting ourselves when we can't any other way. It can also be a way to built confidence which is lacking during younger years - I can admit to having this same dilemma when I was younger and Jess assures me that she got interested in fashion the same way. "As the years went by and my hobbie in photography became a huge part of my life, and I realised I could combine both fashion and photography, therefore combining my two favourite things"

POINT BLANK
"What started off my passion for photography was in year 8 when I was looking at what GCSE's to choose. I saw the photography stand, and mind you I've never been the 'academic' type. I saw this photograph of this one tomato sitting in the middle of this white fridge and it made me think why? I wanted to know more about this subject and why people photographed things in certain ways. This simple photograph sparked off my imagination and started my photography hype."
I think its always important to have that creative outlook in life, whether it be just a hobbie on the side or a career it allows you to acess that part of the mind that you don't get the opportunities to do in other things. If you don't have that creative aspect in your life, some popular suggestions would be: photography, collage making, blogging, playing the guitar (or any instrument), painting, drawing, singing, dancing, designing, creating sketch pads, acting, creative writing, or travelling.

THERES A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE & HATE
"Photography is a love hate relationship for

me sometimes"
Being fustrated and impatient is a common trait in all of us, after all we are only human! Jess shares, if shoots did not turn out the way she wanted that these traits tended to appear for her.
"In a way my own practice scare me as well. I get worried about getting things wrong and what others think of my work. Art/Photography is all about opinion, one person may love it but others hate it. You have to justify your own work".
Not every one is perfect, and no two peoples opinions are ever the same.
BEST VS. WORST
When asking Jess this question it seems as though to her, there is no worst in photography.
"Photography is amazing, you get to meet and work with such intelligent and lovely people."

PHOTOGRAPHY IN FASHION
"Fashion photography is all about working in a team with a stylist, hair & make-up artist, asistant, model & photographer." Without these essential people there to fill in the gaps, Jess states that a photographer would crumble.

DO YOU STILL ENJOY IT NOW?
For some, me included, going to study your passion can have the opposite effect - you turn out to hate it and look in other directions to try and find another passion. HOWEVER Jess still loves it. . .
"I love photography, it is my passion and my future. I don't know for definite which direction of work I want to go into when I leave University yet, but I know that my future holds photography - As my Mum says: It runs in my veins".

LCF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE
"So I'm Studying BA Fashion Photography at the moment at LCF (london college of fashion, as part of university of the arts london). Half of it is theoretical and essay based, and the other half is practical. It's a good balance, although my heart defiantly lies with photography as you would probably agree."

HOW TO GET STARTED
"I would advise anyone that wanted to be a photographer, no matter what direction you wish to go in: DO GCSE's, A-Levels, then do a foundation degree, then finally go to University to do a BA Hons Degree, Then possibly a Masters. I went straight to University from A-levels, not that I regret it, but with art and a practice like this you need as much experiece in the field as you can get. A foundation degree gives you that experience before University. Also networking & work experience is crutial as you can gain contacts and possible work placements from that"
It may seem like the long way around but it's defiantly worth it - it will give you the upper hand on other students that are applying to do the same things as you. If you are rejected from University the first time DO NOT GIVE UP especially within courses such as this one as they are so popular and in demand. Take the year out, get experience, do a foundation degree, do a short course and re-apply again the next year - ITS NEVER TO LATE TO START YOUR DREAM.

EXCITEMENT
When I asked Jess what her most exciting experience within her short career of photography she said:
"My most exciting experience must have been when I was being interviewed at LCF for a place on the BA Fashion Photography course, Mark Lebon was my interviewer and he loved my work (but little did I know who he was at the time). It makes you feel so proud when someone with his experience and knowledge in the field of photography appreciates your work.

INSPIRATION
"What inspires me most is PHOTOGRAPHERS such as Norman Parkinson's stunning film photography, Tim Walker & Chadwick Taylor, as well as Edward Weston . . . I could really go on forever.

FAVOURITES
Tell us about your favourite project . . .
"My favourite photography project must have been my British Culture project where I got to learn all about my own culture and photograph different locations and themes around this topic which taught me a lot about the country I live in (England)."

STYLES & ERAS.
"I really like to work on location as I feel it talks about the fashion that is shown in the photograph and encompasses emotion and feeling into the images, unlike a studio where these emotions are not created. I like to express imagination and take risks within my photography. To push the boundaries a little bit more, to see what experience I can gain, whether its good or awful. I also love analog photography because it is always a surprise as you never know how your images will come out. There is always this special feeling with analog because its raw, its actually there and you can control and hold it within your hands, YOU become the true photographer.

4 YEARS TIME. . .
"I want to have graduated University with a job lined up that I can go straight into to continue my passion for Fashion Photography. However, I am aware that the first time doesn't always work out . . . If so then I may take a year out, or do a masters degree. I am uncertain of my future at the moment so for now I will just go where the wind takes me"
I would agree that this is defiantly a good moto to have, not everyone gets it perfect first time around!!
